Hello Dear Reader!
Welcome to another indie book review! Usually I switch between indie books and traditionally published books, but I’ve been waiting for the chance to read this book, and I personally know the other and talk to her occasionally on Instagram, so there was no way I was gonna pass up on the chance. Her Instagram handle is @laurendfulter_author, so if you like this review and the book sounds like something you’re into, go check her out!
Anyway, time for the review!
The Unanswered Questions is a YA novel that’s got a nice mix of fantasy and sci-fi elements to it, having some pretty advanced tech and magical aspects that are pretty well combined. It’s also got a lovable cast of characters, especially the six teens that are the main focus of this book.
But before I get into that, here’s the synopsis: (From Amazon)
IT'S BEEN 24 HOURS SINCE THE BOMBING. THE FIRST ATTACK IN 300 YEARS.
The world is in panic. Everyone is pointing fingers, desperate for answers.
A terrified young girl stumbles into a small town of the region of North Cordell to find herself immersed in an unfamiliar world and an unreliable mind. She is determined to find safety, with no intentions in becoming involved with the new global conflict.
When a light in the mountains calls to her, she and five others become caught up in a plot against the world.
Now, they must prove their innocence to a mysterious Sergeant, on the threat of death, and discover the truth of the force against the very nature of which they know.
But the truth is deadly.
And once it knows your name, there is no going back.
End synopsis! Let’s get into the review!
There are six characters in The Unanswered Questions, which sounds like a lot, but Lauren D. Fulter does a good job at making it pretty cohesive. This cast of main characters are Felicity, Tabitha, Nikki, Lincoln, Ray, and Cole. All have their own unique personalities, and they cover a wide range of them, from the nearly silent type to the outgoing goofball. I fell in love with all of them and honestly couldn’t bring myself to hate any of them because they’re all good people. And yes, they have their flaws, which make them very realistic. I honestly feel like I could meet someone in real life with one of these characters’ personalities, and these characters are easily my favorite part of this book.
The main supporting characters of this book are also quirky and lovable in their own way, the characters that weren’t the villains anyway. Actually, that’s a lie. There’s a person who is technically a good guy, but his behavior was just not the best, and he was probably the one character I actually genuinely disliked in the book. It was really fun reading the interactions between these minor characters and the main squad. There’s a lot of varying relationship dynamics, and they’re all realistic in the way that they’re so different. No one friendship dynamic is the same, and Lauren D. Fulter did a good job of representing that.
The world this book takes place is basically the real world but many years in the future and pumped with magic and notes of sci-fi. There are different magical human races, falling into the categories of either Pure of Impure, and there were so many it was kind of hard to keep track of, but I found myself liking that. There’s also a lot of history and lore, which I always love to see in the world-building of a book. There’s also a ton of backstory that hasn’t been fully explained yet when it comes to a few of the main characters, which I’m looking forward to discovering in the sequel.
There was a lot I loved in The Unanswered Questions; however, there were a few things that stood out to me while reading it. There was a fair number of typos in the book, scattered every few pages, and the more I read, the more I became distracted by those typos. The plot started to drag on after a certain point in my opinion, and there were times where I felt the pace could be adjusted in certain parts. There were also a few emotional scenes that didn’t hit me as hard as they could’ve, and I found myself feeling confused at some points because of various things. Still, this book was very character-driven, which I personally prefer, and Fulter’s characters are some of the most well-developed characters I’ve ever read. Main characters Nikki and Lincoln are my absolute favorite!
So, The Unanswered Questions rating:
7/10 and looking forward to that sequel. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, especially the characters. The characters were easily the best part for me, so if you like a book with an awesome cast of characters, this may be the one for you!
